A Red Pine forest showing the effects of a forest fire.

Even though these tree trunks are scarred by fire,
they are able to survive due to the very thick outer
bark that protects the inner layer of growth bark.

Not all trees are so lucky, this tree was lost
in the fire but it opened up the canopy
to give way for new growth.

The trunk on this oak shows evidence of a forest fire
that may have occurred over 25 years earlier.

More evidence of how the loss of one tree give way
for another to grow.
